DIY étagère made from (old) dishes
With a little creativity, you can create something unique
Do you have old dishes in the cupboard that you never use anymore? Or do you have our beautiful Mercado dinnerware (or something similar) and want to do something special with it? Then this DIY project is perfect for you! With a little creativity, you can easily make your own unique étagère.
An étagère is not only practical but also a real eye-catcher. Ideal for presenting chocolates, fruit, cookies, or scones in a festive way during a high tea. Even without a special occasion, an étagère looks beautiful on the kitchen table or in the living room..
You can of course buy one in the store... but it's even more fun to make one yourself from old dishes!
What do you need?
- • 1 cup
- • 1 bowl
- • 2 plates (preferably in different sizes)
- • Strong glue (see step 2)
💡 Tip: Mix and match colors, patterns, and styles for a playful and personal result.
Step 1: Choose nice dishes
Choose cups and plates that you like and that go well together. Think about your favorite colors or a specific theme. Old dishes with a small chip are often still perfectly usable for this project.!
Step 2: Choose the right glue
The right glue is essential for a strong and safe result.
✅ Glass & porcelain → 2-component epoxy or special porcelain glue
✅ Earthenware → Epoxy or strong super glue
Step 3: Clean the surfaces
A good preparation leads to better bonding.
- Degrease all parts with cleaning alcohol or acetone
- Make sure everything is completely dry and dust-free
Step 4: Apply the glue carefully
- Use a thin, even layer of glue
- Place the cup in the middle of the plate
- Press firmly and hold for a moment
Work from bottom to top: first the largest plate, then the middle one, and finally the smallest plate.
Step 5: Allow the glue to cure properly
- Always check the drying time on the packaging
- Use tape or clamps if necessary to keep everything in place
Patience is really key here!
Step 6: Finish the edges neatly
- Wipe away excess glue immediately with a damp cloth
